Project Overview

This is the study in which I combined the New Product Development course I took during my MBA education with the UX/UI discipline. During my Industrial Product Design undergraduate education, we used a 3D printer while prototyping. However, reaching these vehicles was sometimes very difficult. I decided to create the idea of the 3D Lab to optimize the demand here.

Project Goal

There are many underutilized 3D printers and many people do not know how to find one, so they need to be gathered in a marketplace.

Concept Project /Evaluation

P2P marketplace, which enables people to reach affordable nearby 3D Printers for any purpose while utilizing the available 3D Printers. Its growth is tied to local network effects but it’s still scalable globally.

Product Innovation Charter (PIC)

1. Background

​

There is no focused competitor in the market worldwide. While the supply and demand for 3D printing increase, the need for a structured marketplace increases.

2. Goals - Objectives

​

The only limitation of our scalability is local language support, which we can achieve easily with time, so our goal is to become the leading 3D-Printer Marketplace globally.

3. Focus

​

Providers need to find customers easily, and customers need to browse available pros in an area according to their technical capabilities and customer service. Therefore our focus technology is matching.

4. Guidelines

​

Agile product development to gain first mover advantage. After building the first product pretty fast, focus on continuous product development based on customer feedback and real-time tests.

Concept Testing

Peer-to-Peer 3D Printer is a perfect marketplace to keep in touch with the people who have idle 3D printers and who need to have 3D printers.

As we all know that 3D printers could be very crucial in some industries when visualizing a project of designing a new product etc. Even out of industries that need 3D printers some people need to have 3D printers. For instance; students who have to do models, projects, etc. Furthermore, even if one has no proficiency in such industries or is not a student who needs to do some models would like to use 3D printers as a hobby.

Nowadays 3D printers provide designers with lots of visualizing abilities. On the other hand, there is a big problem in reaching 3D printers. Many people do not know how to find 3D printers. Vary industrial workers or a few interested people have them but many people who need 3D printers could not reach them. 3D printers have high technology because of it they have financial borders to reach.

As we describe that there should be a platform in order to connect these two groups of people mutually, they need to be gathered in a marketplace. Voila! Peer-to-Peer 3D Printer is the needed marketplace for these consumers.

Product Concept 

Form: Customer browses available providers with hourly fees of 3D printers, chooses one, and shares the project design files. If they come to a deal, the provider prints the project.

Technology: Android / IOS Apps and websites for both sides of the marketplace and technology for matching them.

​

Benefits to Customers: There are not enough commercially available  3D printers. People cannot find 3D printers on demand and also the market prices are too high due to a lack of competition or transparent benchmarking opportunities.

Business Model

We take a 5 - 10 % commission on each transaction from the printer owners (who make money through us). Disintermediation would not be a problem because providers will have a right to receive comments & ratings after paying the commission. The ratings will help them build an online career via trust and transparency.

An extra revenue stream will be premium listing fees.

Marketing Plan

Focusing on high-volume markets and boosting local liquidity wherever the first traction met.

Rating systems for both providers and customers promote trust in the app and better behavior on the part of both.

Growth Strategy

Without overpaying for viral growth, the supply and demand will grow in balance locally. After some traction is acquired, we will let Network Effects work for us.

In this growth process, we expect three different user types of products. Business people (workers, owner, etc.) who have to have a 3D Printer in their business progresses, Students who have to do some models and designs in their projects, and people who are interested in 3D Printers as a hobby. These people would like to do some models like planes, cars or sculptures, etc.

 

We expect huge growth in hobby line people will see the easiness to reach a 3D Printer throughout 2021. In accordance with that their demand for this will be increased. In the business line, we could not expect big growth in users.

We expect that in Q1 of 2021, business people will be our biggest consumers. Throughout Q1 to Q3, the number of business people users will become stable because demand in business life is limited with the projects that people have. In light of the fact that business people’s demand will be stable.

 

In the student line, because of the financial background, we cannot expect a great positive curve in Q1. After the growth process, they can understand the easiness of reach and the importance of our product. After that, we expect an increase between Q3 and Q4. Because of the summer vacation between Q2 and Q3 demand for students will be stable.
